Understanding Domestic Adoptions
If you are considering adoption, you will learn there are two distinct types -- domestic and international. In this article, we will explore domestic adoptions. A domestic adoption means that the child is adopted in the United States. With all the attention being paid to international adoption in the media lately, some people have passed over domestic adoption as an option. It may just be the best option for you if you are looking to bring a child into your home. There are some clear benefits to adopting in the United States. Cost is one such benefit.
One area where you will save money is on travel. Even traveling across the United States is going to cost you less than traveling overseas. You will not have to deal with international hassles like passports and vaccinations. If you choose to adopt in your home state, your costs will be even less. Not to say that adopting a child is free. That is of course not the case. You can expect to pay anywhere from $10,000 to $40,000 in adoption fees depending on the agency you choose.
Another advantage to adopting in the United States is that adoptive parents are more likely to get a newborn if that is what they choose. However, requirements are often more strict. You may be required to attend educational classes designed for adopting parents before being allowed to proceed with the adoption. With this type of adoption, you often also have to be approved by the birth mother. The birth mother, even if she selects you, can change her mind at any time. This can be devastating for potential adoptive parents who had their hearts set on adopting a child. When compared with international adoption, domestic birth mothers are much more involved in the adoption process as a whole.
No matter whether you go for domestic adoptions or international adoptions, you will need the services of a knowledgeable adoption attorney to help you. You will also need to choose a legitimate, reputable agency to deal with. In addition, you should research as much as you can on the subject of adoption so you'll know what to expect during this potentially long and stressful process. Like any adoptive parent will tell you, the process may be long, expensive and difficult to go through but is worth it all once you bring your new son or daughter home.
